Verse:There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. —Proverbs 16:25
After arriving at England’s Gatwick airport, I traveled by train to Victoria Station in London. I was in my early twenties and had never been to Europe, and this was by far the biggest train station I had ever seen in my life.
Eighty million passengers depart and arrive at Victoria Station every year, and millions more transfer there. But getting to Victoria Station was the easy part. Buying a ticket on the underground (subway) to where I was going next was the real challenge. The ticket machine was like nothing I had ever seen.
After finally working out how to purchase a ticket, I then had to figure out how to get to my final destination. What I did not do was jump on the first train I saw. I looked at the map and followed it carefully. Without the map, I would have never made it to where I was going. The Bible says that what may seem right can end up being anything but. You can do what seems right to you, or you can do the wise thing and do what is right in the eyes of God. The Bible is the map given to us by God to help us navigate this troubled world and make it to our heavenly home. Baseball personality Yogi Berra once said, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”* There are times you simply have to make a choice. The goal, of course, is to make wise decisions.
Thankfully, But God provides reliable directions and safe guidance for our lives, enabling us to arrive at the right location.
If you look to God and depend on His Word, you will know soon enough just what to do in a given situation. Knowing that God loves you will give you the confidence to trust His leading. Moses prayed, and God guided Israel through the wilderness. Joshua prayed, and God gave him victory over his enemies.
Solomon prayed, and God answered his prayer for wisdom.
It was when Solomon followed his own inclinations that his experience fell apart. A way is not the right way unless it is God’s way.
