Nurture

Adults · From the book The Hope Of Glory

Verse:

“Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.” “Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” —Matthew 10:29, 31

Anyone who grows a garden learns very quickly that putting a seed into the soil is far from the end of the process. Small plants are delicate and vulnerable, and they require a lot of nurture if they are ever going to be ready to harvest.

Plants need attention and care.

They need to be watered regularly (but not over-watered).

A garden must be weeded, and plants often need to be fertilized. Plants require sunlight, but the gardener must ensure plants do not get too much sun.

The same principles hold true in soul winning.

People coming to faith in Christ must be carefully nurtured.

They must be cared for in a way that speaks to their hearts and encourages growth toward Jesus. New believers must be watered and fed.

Just as young plants need to be protected from the elements, new believers must be protected from the destructive elements that can exist in the church. A critical church member can easily discourage a new believer.

Just as a young plant can be damaged by too much water or fertilizer, a baby Christian can sometimes be given too much information too quickly, with deleterious effects. The church is to be a safe place for those who are growing in their faith in God. It is important that the church show a genuine interest in visitors to the church, kindly follow up on Bible study interests, and invest itself in encouraging those who are learning to leave the world behind to follow Jesus. Jesus tells us we are of great value, and He wants us to show others the same care He shows us.

Many people have turned away from faith in God simply due to neglect.

Taking time to show you care can be the difference between an inexperienced believer succeeding or failing as a Christian.
