Good for You

Adults · From the book The Hope Of Glory

Verse:

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” —Acts 1:8

There are many good reasons to spend time working in a garden. Time invested in gardening typically means healthy, home-grown produce served for family and shared with friends. But even if there was no harvest, gardening would still be profitable. Gardening is good for you. Time spent caring for plants is time not spent focusing on one’s own problems or the problems of the world.

Growing plants is an exercise in cooperating with the creative power of the Creator. The beauty of nature exerts a calming and healing influence.

Gardening is good exercise, with time spent in a garden being good for both mind and body. And gardening comes with rewards.

Fresh vegetables bring health and healing and promote a more abundant life. In the same way, being involved in evangelism is simply good for you. Whether or not a person is won to Christ, the exercise of participating in outreach is good for the soul. Many an unhealthy church would enjoy vastly improved spiritual well-being if church members worried less about smaller issues and focused on the most important matters.

And the most important issues of all are living to glorify God and sharing Jesus with those who do not know Him. Fractured churches are almost always churches that do little outreach. The devil works to sidetrack churches because he knows how powerful a congregation could be if it focused on the Great Commission. And Satan knows how good ministry is for an individual’s spiritual well-being, so he does all he can to distract people from growing spiritually through involvement in mission.

Jesus promised the power of the Holy Spirit for witnessing in Acts 1:8. One reason we see less of the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in our churches is that we often do little that requires the Holy Spirit’s presence.

Although we strive for success, we labor for the Lord knowing that whatever the result, evangelism is simply good for you.
