Verse:“For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.” —2 Chronicles 20:12
Described as “a great multitude,” this enemy would surely lay waste to the armies of Jehoshaphat and bring the nation under foreign domination.
The king called people together from throughout his realm and proclaimed a national fast before he approached God and asked for deliverance from what was a powerful enemy. Against this backdrop Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, prayed a powerful prayer. In 2 Chronicles 20, the desperate king called on God and said, “O LORD God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You?” (verse 6). Jehoshaphat knew precisely who God was.
Jehoshaphat believed God was all-powerful and ruled over all kingdoms of the earth. In other words, defeat was not certain, no matter how bleak things looked. He continued, “Are You not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever?” (verse 7).
In other words, “You have done great things for us in the past. You promised us this land. I am only asking You to keep Your promise and do for us now what You have done for us in the past.” Then he made an honest admission.
“For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do” (verse 12).
He acknowledged that they were incapable of defeating this enemy and that they did not know what they should do. And then came the real power of his prayer. He said, “But our eyes are upon You” (verse 12). In other words, “We are looking toward heaven. We are looking to You. And we are expecting great things.” When you pray, no matter how apparently mighty your enemy, remember God is all-powerful.
He has done great things for you in the past.
If your eyes are on God, they are focused in the right direction.
Jehoshaphat was delivered. His people were saved.
Like Jehoshaphat, you can expect deliverance when you pray and keep your eyes on God.
