Verse:

So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!” —Matthew 27:54

The city of Prague, in the Czech Republic, is renowned as one of the most atheistic cities in Europe, yet God works even in the most challenging of locations. The evangelistic meeting I held there several years ago was streamed online, and unbeknownst to anyone on our team, Anna had stumbled onto the livestream and began watching. She watched every night and was being touched by what she was hearing. When I invited people to fill out a decision card during the meetings, Anna, realizing she did not have a decision card, was undeterred. She wrote down the decision questions and made a decision card of her own. She filled it out, found an address online, and mailed in the card. Anna was determined to make a decision and wanted us to know she had done so. Jessica worked as a Bible worker on an evangelistic series in a large city in the United States. Her husband, Kent, was not a practicing Christian.

Jessica was disappointed Kent wasn’t able to attend more than a handful of meetings owing to the long distance from their home to the meeting hall. During one of the final appeals of the series, Jessica’s phone rang.

It was Kent. He had been watching the livestream and wanted to make a decision for baptism! “Jessica,” he began, “would you mind filling out a decision card for me? Say that ‘Yes, I want to follow Jesus.’ Check ‘Yes, I would like to be baptized.’ And please write on the card that ‘Yes, I would like to join the church!’ ” Jessica was overjoyed. Kent’s baptism was truly memorable. We must remember that although we can’t always see what God is doing in hearts, He is at work. In unlikely cities, in unlikely lives, and through unlikely circumstances, God is appealing to hearts everywhere.

When Jesus died on the cross, a Roman centurion, perhaps the least likely person to express belief in Jesus as Lord, said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” (Matthew 27:54). We must not limit God’s ability to reach a lost soul. God’s Spirit is working to bring the most unlikely to faith in Jesus.
