Baby Jessica

Adults · From the book The Hope Of Glory

Verse:

He saved them from the hand of him who hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. —Psalm 106:10

In 1987, the eyes of the world were on Midland, Texas, after an eighteen-month-old girl fell into a well in her aunt’s backyard.

The well was just eight inches wide, and Jessica McClure became wedged in the well shaft twenty-two feet below the surface of the ground.

The drama was perfect for cable news, which at the time wasn’t yet ten years old. The story received wall-to-wall media coverage as an anxious nation watched. Getting baby Jessica out of the well was a race against time.

President Ronald Reagan said, “Everybody in America became godmothers and godfathers of Jessica while this was going on.” She was often referred to as “Everyone’s baby.” The rescue was fraught with difficulty.

Rescuing a twenty-pound girl from a pipe more than twenty feet below ground, surrounded by rock described as “nearly impregnable” and “as hard as steel,” was as difficult as it sounds. Workers who labored to near exhaustion said that thinking of little Jessica kept them going. It seemed that everyone remotely close to the situation was asked to comment. The physician who delivered Jessica was interviewed by the Odessa American newspaper and said she was praying for the child.

She had a baby about the same age.

Baby Jessica was stuck in the well for fifty-eight hours before being rescued. After the ordeal, she continued to live in Midland, and as an adult, lives less than two miles from the well where she almost lost her life.

While unable to remember the event, Jessica is acutely aware she was saved. A scar on her forehead serves as a visible reminder of what happened back in 1987. It tells her that when she was hopelessly stuck and couldn’t save herself, she was rescued. Now a mother of two children, Jessica Morales was saved by people who cared.* Scars on Jesus’ hands and feet remind us that when we were hopelessly stuck in sin and unable to save ourselves, Jesus gave His life so we might live.

Like baby Jessica, you have been saved by Someone.

This Someone paid the ultimate price to give you everlasting life.
