“So Much Wasted Time”

Adults · From the book The Hope Of Glory

Verse:

I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food. —Job 23:12

One of the biggest stars of the entertainment industry in the 1970s was David Cassidy. The son of an actor, Cassidy was featured in The Partridge Family, a hugely successful television musical sitcom that aired between 1970 and 1974.

Cassidy became a teen idol and performed sold-out shows before enormous audiences. The hysteria accompanying his 1974 visit to Australia led to official calls to have him deported, and a fourteen-year-old girl lost her life in a stampede at a David Cassidy concert in London the same year.

Cassidy’s fan club boasted more members than that of Elvis Presley or the Beatles. Yet, in spite of his popularity, personal challenges took a heavy toll, and he died at the age of sixty-seven. According to his daughter, his last words were, “So much wasted time.”* “So much wasted time.” You don’t want to say that about your relationship with God. “I could have been closer to God, but so much wasted time.” “I could have known the Bible much better and experienced more hope and positivity in my life, but so much wasted time.” Time spent in communion with God or in serving others is the best possible use of time. Every person is given twenty-four hours every day, hours that will be invested one way or another. They can be invested for good, or they can be aimlessly frittered away. “Of no talent He has given will He require a more strict account than of our time.”† Yesterday’s missed prayers cannot be prayed today.

Neglected opportunities to read the Bible cannot be undone.

Failure to invest in family time often has very negative long-term consequences. Paul wrote, “Be careful how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15, 16, NASB).

Not one soul will look back over his or her life and regret that too much time was spent in the company of the God of heaven.

Prioritizing one’s time and putting God first is something no child of God will ever regret.
