Verse:“The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” —Proverbs 15:3
What comes to your mind when you hear the word espionage? From a biblical perspective, you could recall the twelve Hebrew spies who explored the land of Canaan (Numbers 13) or the two spies hidden by Rahab in Jericho (Joshua 2).
From a modern viewpoint, you might think of the Soviet KGB or the American CIA. Espionage aims to gather secret information about enemy countries and, sometimes, even friendly countries. On January 22, 1946, United States president Harry S. Truman set up the Central Intelligence Group, eventually renamed the Central Intelligence Agency, the most powerful intelligence agency in the world.
Today, the US Intelligence Community (IC) is a coalition of seventeen agencies and organizations (including the CIA) that work both independently and collaboratively to gather and analyze the intelligence necessary to conduct foreign relations and national security activities. As sophisticated and efficient as the IC and other intelligence agencies might be, none of them can compare with God’s intelligence network that oversees the whole universe! No wonder King David exclaimed, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?” (Psalm 139:7).
And King Solomon said, “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3). In contrast to human agencies, God’s intelligence network is a friendly one, intended to rescue us from the forces of evil.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11).
This means that the most sophisticated intelligence network in the whole universe is working on our behalf! We are absolutely protected by God, and nothing can ever happen to us outside the sphere of His all-encompassing knowledge and absolute foreknowledge. Praise God that He cares for each of us in such amazing and efficient ways!
