Verse:“Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” —Luke 10:20
The memories of many famous people have been perpetuated in halls of fame, on monuments, or in portraits. Some people have designed famous projects carrying their own names, such as the famous Eiffel Tower on Champ de Mars in Paris. Originally built for a world fair celebrating the centennial of the French Revolution, it is now visited every year by some seven million people. The Eiffel Tower is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower.
The original plan was developed by Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, with additional insights by Stephen Sauvestre. Work on the foundation started on January 28, 1887, and the tower was completed in 1889.
In 1957 a broadcasting aerial was added to its top. The tower is 1,063 feet (324 meters) tall (including the television antenna at its top) and weighs 7,300 tons. A total of 18,038 pieces were joined together using 2.5 million rivets.
Despite initial criticism and protests by leading artists and intellectuals, the Eiffel Tower has become established as a prominent symbol of France.
In addition to Eiffel’s, there are seventy-two names of French scientists, engineers, and mathematicians engraved on the tower in recognition of their outstanding contributions. This is one of the most remarkable halls of fame in all the world.
But remember, “The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever” (1 John 2:17, NIV). This means that no human hall of fame, or even all halls of fame together, can be compared to the privilege of having our names written in the heavenly book of life. Many need what they do not have, namely, true religion! “Profession alone is nothing. Names are registered upon the church books upon earth, but not in the book of life.”53 Perhaps you love “the praise of men more than the praise of God” (John 12:43). You and I must seek less human glory that vanishes and more of the heavenly glory that endures forever. When this is the case, we can rejoice because our names are “written in heaven” (Luke 10:20).
