Verse:Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” —Isaiah 30:21, NIV
There was a time when finding some places could be quite a headache. But life and traveling became much easier with the improvement and popularization of the GPS. This space-based radio navigation system is operated by the United States Air Force and made available worldwide. “On February 10, 1993, the National Aeronautic Association selected the GPS Team as winners of the 1992 Robert J. Collier Trophy, the nation’s most prestigious aviation award.”13 Undeniably, GPS is one of today’s most important and useful technologies. GPS devices can show us the route we should follow, warn us when we are in danger of leaving it, and bring us back to it if we miss a turn.
There is a spiritual parallel: Jesus is “the way” (John 14:6), and the Holy Spirit is the divine Agent who keeps us faithful to Jesus and His word (John 16:13, 14). According to God’s promise, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it’” (Isaiah 30:21, NIV).
One of the most important instruments the Holy Spirit uses in carrying out this function is the gift of prophecy. As Seventh-day Adventists, we believe that Ellen White’s inspired writings are a prophetic GPS to guide us through the final and most challenging part of our journey to our heavenly home. As with a GPS device, which is only a tool to keep us on the right route, Mrs. White’s writings are not intended to replace the Bible but to keep us faithful to it. They put boundaries on our biblical interpretation so that we do not distort the true meaning of God’s Word.
Disliking those boundaries, critics and revisionists undermine Ellen White’s prophetic authority so that they can have the freedom to twist the biblical text. We should never silence or distort God’s wonderful prophetic word.
As Christ said to the Seventy, “He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me” (Luke 10:16).
If Ellen White was a false prophet, we should reject her; but on the other hand, if she was a true prophet, we should accept her divinely inspired messages for us today.
