The Mystery of Life

Adults · From the book Every Day a New Beginning

Verse:

I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. —Psalm 139:14

Have you ever marveled at the complexity of the human body, with its many organs and interacting systems? Every single person has an extremely complex body with voluntary and involuntary muscles, an astonishing immune system with amazing healing capability, and an exceedingly mysterious brain that challenges all scientific research. How are thoughts and emotions generated? What makes every human being unique from all others? Over the centuries, scientists have tried to understand the human body and its varied functions. For example, DNA research has uncovered foundational aspects of the genetic instructions related to the development, growth, and function of living organisms. The much-publicized Human Genome Project sought to sequence the entire human genome. On April 14, 2003, researchers announced that the process had been completed.

However, according to the leaders of the Human Brain Project, “Understanding the human brain is one of the greatest challenges facing 21st-century science.” On April 2, 2014, the British Independent explained, “We each have something approaching 100 billion nerve cells —neurons— in the human brain (more than the number of stars in the Milky Way). Each of them can be connected directly with maybe 10,000 others, totaling some 100 trillion nerve connections. If each neuron of a single human brain were laid end to end, they could be wrapped around the Earth twice over.

Deciphering the biological conundrum of this most complex of organs makes unraveling the genome, for example, look like child’s play.” No wonder the psalmist David said that he was fearfully, wonderfully, and marvelously made by God (Psalm 139:14).

As valuable as we are by design, much more value was added to us when God bought us with “the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18, 19) to be “a temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:19). Given that God has invested so much in each of us, why should we not value ourselves and care adequately for our own health? “Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:20).
