The Power of Prayer

Adults · From the book Every Day a New Beginning

Verse:

“If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” —John 14:14

Prayer is God’s method of keeping us in tune with Him and the condition for receiving His most precious blessings. Studying Scripture, one can see that there are some blessings God gives us whether we pray or not (Matthew 5:45).

But most blessings are reserved for those who ask with a pure heart (Proverbs 28:9). Christ highlighted this condition when He stated, “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it” (John 14:14). George Müller (1805–1898) went further than most might expect in living a life of complete dependence on God.

George was born in Germany, but when he was twenty-three years old, he moved to London to work as a missionary to the Jews.

Things did not work out as he had hoped, and on May 25, 1832, he moved to Bristol, England. There he established and directed the Ashley Down Orphanage, where he cared for 10,024 orphans over the course of his lifetime.

He also opened 117 schools, providing Christian education to more than 120,000 children. His orphanage system was run on prayer alone —Müller never asked for money. He kept a record of more than fifty thousand answered prayers and said that none of his prayers remained unanswered. Among the most well-known answers to prayer came one morning when three hundred children were ready to go to school, but there was no food for breakfast. Müller asked the children to sit at the empty table and then gave thanks for the meal. When they finished praying, a baker knocked on the door with sufficient fresh bread to feed everyone, and the milkman’s cart broke down in front of the orphanage, so he gave the orphanage ten large cans of milk.

While sailing to America, Müller told the captain of the ship about an appointment he had in Quebec on the upcoming Saturday afternoon.

The captain replied that, due to heavy fog, it would be impossible to arrive on time. Müller replied, “No, my eye is not on the density of the fog, but on the living God, Who controls every circumstance of my life.”48 He prayed, and in less than five minutes, the fog disappeared from the sky. The captain became a Christian.

Müller lived a life of intentional prayer, and we can do the same.

God may not always answer our prayers in just the way we would like, but He never leaves a sincere prayer unanswered.

You can trust Him!
