Moral Decline

Adults · From the book Every Day a New Beginning

Verse:

“For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” —Matthew 24:38, 39

Is our world today better or worse than it was two hundred years ago? The answer to this question depends on your perspective.

From a technological viewpoint, our world has improved significantly. But socially speaking, moral values have declined remarkably.

Yet, there are strong marriages, like islands in our social ocean, though whipped about by every immoral storm. Billy Graham and Ruth Bell were married on August 13, 1943. Their inspiring marriage lasted for nearly sixty-four years before Ruth died on June 14, 2007. Asked about her husband’s frequent absences from home, Ruth once remarked, “I’d rather have a little of Bill than a lot of any other man.” The day before her death, Billy stated, “Ruth is my soul mate and best friend, and I cannot imagine living a single day without her by my side. I am more in love with her today than when we first met over 65 years ago as students at Wheaton College.” Unfortunately, not many modern couples build such a romantic and long-lasting marriage! In the mid-1970s, the dean of men at the boarding school where I was enrolled regularly quoted Ruth Graham’s famous statement, “If God doesn’t punish America, He’ll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.” Without question, things have gotten much worse since then! If Ruth Graham was concerned about the moral decline of the world at that time, what would she say today? For example, in the past, people spoke only of two genders: masculine and feminine.

But by mid-2014, the Telegraph reported that British Facebook users could choose from seventy-one different gender options! Christ warned that the antediluvian lifestyle of “eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage” would be practiced just before the end of the world (Matthew 24:37–39).

The moral decline of our world demands that either God must intervene in human affairs or humanity will destroy itself.

But Christ is coming soon to destroy the wicked (Revelation 21:8) and establish His kingdom of righteousness (Daniel 7:13, 14). Praise the Lord!
