A Legacy for Life

Adults · From the book Every Day a New Beginning

Verse:

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. —Romans 12:17, 18, NIV

In 1927, Max Ehrmann (1872–1945) wrote his poem “Desiderata” (Latin for “Desired things”). He died on September 9, 1945, and those inspiring words remained widely unknown until the early 1970s.

The text reads, in part, as follows: Go placidly amidst the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak [the] truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Therefore be at peace with God, . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

This advice can help us live a better life in a world that is growing increasingly chaotic.
