Golden Cords

Adults · From the book Every Day a New Beginning

Verse:

“Enlarge the place of your tent, And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; Do not spare; Lengthen your cords, And strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, And your descendants will inherit the nations, And make the desolate cities inhabited. —Isaiah 54:2, 3

Adventist education provides a learning environment for transmitting biblical knowledge and values that will last for eternity.

Committed to that noble ideal, some schools have become models of training, inspiring missionaries to carry the Adventist message around the globe.

One such school is Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska.

When Union College was dedicated on September 24, 1891, its first president, W. W. Prescott, stated that all its lines of education should center on Christ. The report in the Advent Review and Sabbath Herald ended with this insightful projection: “Union College will become a power in the cause, and aid in bringing many souls at last unto glory. So may it be.” And it has, indeed, been the case.

At the commencement exercises on Sunday evening, May 20, 1906, the graduating class of that year presented a large missionary map of the world to the school, which was accepted by President C. C. Lewis. It had a golden cord extending from Union College to each point in the world where a missionary from Union College had gone.

The map was kept on the front wall of the college chapel, and cords were added as new graduates went to serve in foreign lands.

In 1936, at the hanging of the golden cords, President M. L. Andreasen proposed that the institution might be called the College of the Golden Cords.

He also suggested that a piece of cord should be sent out to all their missionaries as a symbol that the college community continued to pray for their success and safety. The cords provided a sense of attachment and belonging to those serving in the hardship and loneliness of the mission fields.

Regardless of where you are right now, offer a prayer for the dedicated missionaries who are preaching the everlasting gospel around the globe.

If you know some of them, you might even send a short note saying that you are praying for them. As simple as it may be, this gesture of care and support can make a great difference in their lives!
