The Walk

Women · From the book Color my world with love

Verse:

So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. —Matthew 21:6, 7, NKJV

Today I completed the Palm Sunday Walk, an annual event held on the Sunday before Easter. My mom and I went together. Every year people from the Bermuda National Trust pick an area of Bermuda to explore. This year’s Palm Sunday Walk explored Paget and Warwick parishes. We walked along the shoreline, up hills overlooking the ocean, through the Alfred Blackburn Nature Reserve, across a school field, and through hotel properties. When I say we, I am talking about hundreds of people. During the walk, I was able to take some beautiful pictures of flora and fauna. We passed two water stations. In an hour and forty-five minutes, I traveled just under five miles.

It wasn’t until after the walk, though, that I reflected on its significance. As Christians, we know that many people who had come to see Jesus walked with Him during what is known as the triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The story is recorded in Matthew 21. I began to wonder about the people who had walked to see Jesus that day. Was their walk long or short? Did they feel thirsty, and were they able to get water along the way? Were their minds on Jesus, or were they just excited to be on their way to keep the Passover? Were they hoping to see Jesus as a king? We know that the people asked, “Who is this?”

Their question did not mean that the people of Jerusalem had not heard of Jesus. Rather they were asking, “Who is this person who enters Jerusalem as if He were the Messiah?”

To describe this amazing event, Ellen G. White wrote, “All nature seemed to rejoice. The trees were clothed with verdure, and their blossoms shed a delicate fragrance on the air. A new life and joy animated the people. The hope of the new kingdom was again springing up.”*

Jesus will soon set up a new kingdom. Someday soon, there will be another triumphal entry, another “walk,” but this time into the New Jerusalem. And the faithful of all the ages will be with Him. Before that day, though, will you recognize the Savior as the Messiah?

Will you be ready?
