Verse:I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. —Psalm 116:1, 2, NIV
Sooner than we thought, Adjei, my husband, and I had an empty nest. Our children all left home. We didn’t need the extra rooms, so we thought about moving into a smaller, less expensive apartment. We tried to present some application forms to the management of our hoped-for apartment. As the clerk read through my application, she said, “Oh, Wite-Out® is not accepted on forms.” Next, she rejected my Internal Revenue Service (IRS) 1040 tax forms because we had self-filed. “You need to contact the IRS for a real transcript,” she said. Then she added, “Your yearly income is too low to qualify you for one of our apartments.” As I was on my way out the door, she said, “Besides, we don’t have a vacant apartment anyway.”
I told Adjei about my experience. He just bowed his head for a moment. So I whispered a short prayer too. Then my husband asked that we pray together over this issue. After the prayer, he said, “Do not worry. It will be well.” We wondered why our income looked insufficient because we had been paying three hundred dollars more each month than we would have to pay in the new apartment. We called the IRS and were assured that their official transcript would arrive within five to ten days. Adjei and I thanked the Lord and left the situation in His hands.
Dear reader, God assures us that He hears our voice when we pray to Him (Psalm 116:1, 2). And God heard our prayer. The writer of Psalm 63:3 stated, “Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you” (NIV). So I did not worry about the apartment. I just kept praising God as I waited. I knew that the Lord would never put me to shame. Two days before the arrival of the IRS transcript, I received a letter from the housing management that my application had been approved! Really? How? Even if they had ignored the Wite-Out®, how about the annual income? Oh, and I was still waiting for the IRS letter. Did they check my application thoroughly? One thing I do know: “I love the LORD, for he heard my voice” (Psalm 116:1, NIV). So, as my girls used to say, “Clap for Jesus, everyone!” With Him, all things are possible.
