What’s Your Sign?

Women · From the book Color my world with love

Verse:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son , that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. ” — John 3:16, NKJV

As I drive to the church where I worship during the summer months , I travel on the Second New Hampshire Turnpike , a scenic route that winds its way through several small mountains . This winding rural road passes through the center of several small communities . This road provides me with a lot to see on my way to church : wildlife such as turkey , deer , and moose ; American flags hanging from utility poles ; a wind farm with impressive windmills atop a mountain ridge ; and the vivid fall foliage of New England .

This year , however , I noticed that as I travel through the town of Unity, two houses have quaint little signposts that hold changeable signs . I have seen , among others , the following messages : “ Repent or perish ! ” “ God is not mocked ! ” “ Prepare to meet thy God ! ”

These signs took me by surprise the first time I noticed them . While I do admit the truth of these messages , they are not what I would choose to hang from a signpost in front of my own home .

So I started to ponder: What message would I hang if the signpost were in my front yard ? Certainly, I would want people to know that my God is a God of love and that believing in Jesus is a wonderful experience . I would want to communicate the hope available to all who believe in Him and the life - changing power and joy that comes from a love relationship with Him .

As I traveled along the bumpy road , my thoughts returned to my reality . It would be futile to put up a signpost in my front yard . My house is on a narrow back road on which very few vehicles travel . No one would notice a sign in front of my house.

Then it hit me — I don’t need a sign in front of my house to communicate the many truths about Jesus. I already am the sign!

When people interact with me , I hope they are learning about God’s love at the same time . Today , we have the opportunity to reflect the infinite love of Jesus to all who are around us . We get to decide what the sign of our lives will communicate to others about Him .
