Verse:Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. —Isaiah 65:24, KJV
It is the small things that have me in awe of God. Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate all God’s blessings, the spoken prayers I expect God to hear and answer. However, it is the small, unspoken prayers that put me in awe of God. It’s the things I have done that I don’t even want to admit I have done, much less utter out loud in prayer.
It is these prayers that I whisper to myself when I don’t want anyone to hear me, not even God.
I’m talking about those times when, for example, I have lost my keys for the twentieth time or when I have locked myself out of my van or when I am thirty minutes late for a business meeting. Of course, I ask for His help in situations such as these.
Yet it’s the other times when I need God’s help but I am too afraid to ask because my need seems so unimportant when God has more important prayers to answer.
One morning I received a phone call from my brother, who needed my help. He had left his wallet at the church the day before. I knew how important this was to him.
In my eagerness to help, I hung up the phone and headed toward the city. However, I had forgotten to get my brother’s new address since he had relocated.
I tried calling him, but there was no answer.
I thought to myself, If only he would look out his window and see me, that would be great. As I drove around a block, suddenly my brother appeared! He looked around and began to walk down the stairs in the opposite direction of the van, not seeing me.
Nevertheless, I called out to him, and he turned around. What was so amazing is that he had no idea I was coming.
In a split second, God had heard my unspoken prayer.
God tells us in His Word that He will answer us even before we call. God knows our needs before we know them ourselves. Our God loves us. Not only is He aware of our needs and concerns but He is also willing to help us no matter how small our dilemma.
