Verse:I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thoumayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear;and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. —Revelation 3:18, KJV
Grandma, I want my meditation,” my granddaughter requested of me with urgency in her four-year-old voice.
“OK, dear,” I replied. “Climb up in the bed with Grandma.”
Neriah loves family worship and would learn snatches of Bible texts her older siblings were memorizing. One day, she beamed up at me. “Grandma, I know the text!” And she verbalized it: “Babylon is fallen, is fallen” (Revelation 14:8, KJV).
Well, meditation time it was! Cradling her in my arms, we sang together some songs: “Jesus Never Fails” and “Prayer Changes Things.” A Bible story followed. Then we had prayer, and our meditation ended.
I started dozing off to sleep. Little Neriah climbed up and fetched her cough mixture, brought it to me, and said, “Grandma, I want my medication.”
I smiled as the truth dawned on me. This lively little girl—that a cold was slowing down due to continued bouts of coughing—had previously asked me, not for meditation, but for her medication.
The Bible says that we are sick. “The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment” (Isaiah 1:5, 6, KJV). Jesus Himself said, “They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Mark 2:17, KJV). What then do we need? We need to meditate upon God’s Word, hiding His truths in our hearts that we will not sin against Him. Additionally, it would do us well to accept the medicated eyesalve, which God offers us so that we may see the wondrous things in His law. For us, what will it be: Meditation, medication—or both?
