Weavers of the Fabric of Life

Women · From the book Color my world with love

Verse:

She spins her own cloth, and she helps the poor and the needy. . . .She does her own sewing, and everything she wears is beautiful. —Proverbs 31:19, 20, 22, CEV “Abraham believed God, and God accepted Abraham’s faith, and that faith made him right with God.” And Abraham was called God’s friend. —James 2:23, NCV

My daughter, Kristin Marie, gave me the gift of a lesson with a master weaver. During the lesson, I learned to thread a lap loom and to weave fabric. For a seamstress, tailor, and lover of fabrics, this was the gift of a lifetime that filled a void. A void left thirty years ago by the untimely death of my fabric-loving mother-in-law, Lillian—and the wound that ripped my heart a few weeks ago by the all too early death of my sister, Marcia.

Lillian and I would roam fabric stores, caressing beautiful fabrics and imagining elegant garments draping and flowing. With Marcia, time did not matter when we entered a fabric store. She went immediately to the shelves overflowing with yarn. Simple rows of thread, undulating and overriding themselves, yet staying in place. Then there was fabric for crafting beautiful garments and elegantly dressing royalty, yet simple enough to shield the body of a pauper.

Death has a way of rending the fabric of our souls, tearing warp and woof, leaving holes, voids, and visual reminders of what once was. Something is missing. My loom is a reminder that fabric, like life, permits us to weave threads of beauty into something even more beautiful.

What beautiful threads will you encounter today? And what beautiful fabric will your threads weave?

Weave on, my friends. Weave on.

Thank You, Lord, for friendships. Thank You especially for calling me Your friend as I trust You to mend the rent fabric of my soul. Please help me be a friend to someone today.
