The Two Spies

Women · From the book Color my world with love

Verse:

And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spysecretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there. —Joshua 2:1, KJV

After reading today’s verse, my mind became riveted upon two phrases: “two men to spy secretly” and “go view the land.” These phrases awakened questions, especially after I reread the verse with my personal context: “And Jesus the Son of God sent out of heaven two beings to spy secretly, saying, Go view the earth, even [the city where I live]. And they went, and came to a sinner’s house, named [my name] and lodged there.”

Joshua’s mandate to the two spies was to leave their campground, enter Jericho, and secretly observe, investigate, substantiate, and gather information about the city’s defense capabilities so he could prepare strategically for battle. Wow! What a task and an important assignment. As I thought about the responsibility of the spies, I thought, Is it possible that I am going through the same secret scrutiny by spies as were the citizens of Jericho? My answer is a conclusive yes. My guardian angel and the Holy Spirit, I believe, are my two secret spies. Both have the very important task of gathering evidence about my character, lifestyle, thoughts, and actions, which God, the Righteous Judge, has authorized them to do. This silent surveillance of the landscape of my life is how He keeps faithful records about me.

Although the people of Jericho were on high alert for enemy infiltration, they could not hinder the spies from doing their job. Despite the existing state of emergency and tightly guarded gates, the spies were detected only after they were lodged at the residence of Rahab the harlot.

I have come to realize that I cannot hinder the work of the “spies” in my life; they will fulfill their mission. I also realize that as Rahab was alert to the secret assignment of the spies, so must I be. I must be mindful of the presence of the Holy Spirit and my guardian angel each moment of each day. I should also endeavor to make my home (my life) an inviting, available, and habitable place where they will want to dwell. The Israelite spies were key participants in the scarlet-cord agreement of deliverance and salvation for Rahab and her family. I pray that the report of my “spies” will lead to my salvation and not to my destruction.
