In August 2018, I accompanied my husband to Kigali, Rwanda, where he was a guest speaker during a camp meeting at a large church there. After our first evening program, some ladies approached me, asking if I could provide some presentations uniquely for the women. (At the time, I was the coordinator for our denomination’s Shepherdess program* in West-Central Africa.) When I agreed, they arranged through their district pastor to schedule some evening programs for the women. For three evenings, we ladies enjoyed seminars together as we explored the topic “How to Stay Young and Beautiful Without Damaging Our Bodies.”
One evening after the program, a lady came to me and said, “I know you very well. Do you remember that several years ago, in 1994, you came to our dormitory, prayed with us, and read Bible texts to encourage us?”
Yes, I remembered. My husband and I had stopped at our Christian university in Rwanda, after month-long evangelistic meetings in Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the end of that week, the girls at the university pleaded with us to come and pray in every dormitory room. We did so from 7:00 P.M. until 2:00 the next morning! In the last room, after we prayed, two young ladies presented us with two Bibles and church hymnals in their native language, Kiswahili. It was hard to say goodbye. I left Rwanda with that scene in my mind. Some weeks later, war broke out. When I learned that many had perished on that very campus, I thought of those two young ladies, remembering their faces and feeling the sadness of separation.
Twenty-four years had passed. Now here, in Kigali, this woman said to me, “I am one of the young ladies you prayed for in the last room of the dorm. God saved us, and we are serving Him as pastors’ wives here in Kigali.” What a joy!
I believe it will also be a wonderful experience to meet our loved ones in the heavens when Jesus comes, as He promised in the Bible. There we will stay and live with Him forever and ever. Amen!
