Verse:Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins. They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door. “LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death. —Psalm 107:17–20, NLT
Do you feel in over your head? Maybe you are. I remember being on a family vacation in Jamaica, at my dad’s favorite place, Doctor’s Cave Beach. This particular day, my dad’s sister joined us. Her laugh could lift the atmosphere, drive away storm clouds, and cause everyone around to join in her jubilee. Dad and Auntie were getting ready to jump into the beautiful blue Caribbean. She was laughing and ready to experience the deep blue. Before jumping in, Dad cautioned me, “Now, Tricia, don’t do what I’m about to do.” Then off he ran, speeding into a running long jump and diving into the Caribbean. I was always enamored with my Dad’s swimming ability. I could not swim, but he made it look so easy. So I decided that I would disregard my Dad’s command and try what I saw him do. Let’s just say I soon found myself in over my head.
I was drowning. I saw my short nine years flash before me. Why was I in over my head? I had disregarded my dad’s instruction. Now I found myself flailing for my life. As I struggled to find the surface for what felt like an eternity, the deep blue Caribbean seemed to be winning. Then suddenly, I felt warm arms pull me up. It was my aunt! She saved my life.
Have you ever felt as if you were in over your head? Could it be you are in over your head right now? In an unpleasant position—health challenges, financial ruin, a bad relationship, an unfortunate circumstance—because you decided to disregard wise counsel or even God’s instruction? The good news is God is not happy to see us suffer even when it’s our fault. He loves us. Like my aunt, He is willing and able to save us.
