Hold Your Breath

Women · From the book Covered And Carried

Verse:

“Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” —Matthew 10:29–31, NKJV

When I was on a recent field trip with my students, the Lord taught me a valuable lesson. As a third-grade teacher, I love field trips and so do my students! I mean, what child doesn’t? On this particular day, we had gone on a field trip to an aquarium as part of our study of a unit on habitats. The aquarium presenter referred to different kinds of animals and how they adapt to their environment.

One of the animals she told us about was an elephant seal. An elephant seal can hold its breath for up to two hours, often diving deep to forage.

Wow! I thought when I heard this. What an amazing God! God has given each animal what it needs to survive in its unique environment.

The elephant seal doesn’t worry about how much air it needs to forage. It senses that it has been given up to two hours to hunt for food and that the food is there, waiting for it deep in the ocean. If God has done amazing things for the preservation of animals, how much more will He provide for our needs? Although we know He cares, we sometimes doubt: “I don’t have food to cook for supper.” “I don’t have money for tuition.” “I need a job.” “I need to be free of this relationship.” “I want a husband.” “I want to be healed.” Take a breath. Then slowly exhale. Sisters, trust God.

Be confident. Know that He is providing just what you need.
