The Titanic

Women · From the book Covered And Carried

Verse:

“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” —Revelation 21:4, NKJV

After the movie Titanic was released in December 1997, it received great ratings because the love story between a young couple of different social classes played out against the backdrop of the actual, ill-fated maiden voyage of the Titanic in April 1912. Most people who see the movie probably mourn the loss of the fictional hero more than the fifteen hundred actual souls that perished in the cold Atlantic Ocean when the ship hit an iceberg. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the large Titanic Museum while vacationing in Branson, Missouri, United States of America.

My husband and I walked through the museum, reading about the various people on that ship, watching video presentations, and viewing the wall that displayed the names of every person on board —first, second, and third class passengers and crew. Suddenly, everything that had been just entertainment in the movie came to life for me. That evening we watched the movie again.

Even though it is three hours and fifteen minutes long, I desired to see it one more time in light of my museum experience that day.

Throughout the movie, I was fact-checking against all that I had seen, read, heard, and experienced earlier in the day. I now was able to look for certain things and understand other details as I watched the movie through the lens of the immense human tragedy—not just from the viewpoint of the love story.

I was able to see the story as if for the first time, not just as entertainment but rather as the great tragedy it was that left many families in pain.

When the movie ended, I grieved, weeping as I felt the pain and horror of the event. From my experience that day, I realized even more deeply two other things. First, the love of Jesus has no boundaries. His love overcame all obstacles that would have kept Him from dying on the cross on our behalf. Second, when you have experienced Christ on a personal level, as I experienced the Titanic Museum that day when history came to life, it changes everything. It changes how you view, interact, and experience life because God and His love have truly become much more real to you!
