Verse:“May the LORD bless you and protect you. May the LORD smile on you and be gracious to you. May the LORD show you his favor and give you his peace.” —Numbers 6:24–26, NLT
That’s a real good story and worth sharing,” said Penny Wheeler, my forever friend who has faithfully served in various women’s ministries positions over the years. I highly value her opinion. Penny is also an auntie (in the family of God) to my boy, Sonny. He calls her “DeeDee” (his word for auntie).
It is also his name for one of his favorite chauffeurs —Gerry.
Most often, “Dad-Ron” is our chauffeur, but there have been numerous times he has sent his “precious cargo” off with others.
In fact, Sonny and I have logged thousands of miles together, especially traveling from northern Alberta, Canada, to visit family and friends in the state of Oregon. Sonny loves going on road trips! Often during prayer and praise time at church, Sonny stands and proclaims to the congregation, “Go car, DeeDee?” He is remembering good times and desires more fun road trips! There is no need for an explanation for the church family. They know how fond Sonny is of his DeeDee.
She’s on his support team as a part-time respite caregiver. You see, as of this date, Sonny’s greatest accomplishment was getting out of diapers around the age of twelve. Regarding Sonny’s and my travels, Dad-Ron once gave me wise advice: “Whenever there is a need to make a pit stop to use a restroom at a convenience store, please buy something. It’s just polite and the right thing to do!” Since we don’t need treats, we buy something inexpensive. Then Sonny hands the small purchase right back to the cashier who has just sold it to us. Sonny says, “Thank you,” and then tells his life’s story in his “language.” It’s about a two-minute speech! He is doing his best to make another friend on this side of Paradise. I then explain that the small gift is “a token of appreciation for using your restroom.” Expressing gratitude this way has become another joy in my life. I believe each small gift has been a dollar well spent to express our appreciation and make a new friend.
