In the Hands of the Potter

Women · From the book Covered And Carried

Verse:

Arise, and go down to the potter’s house. … Behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. … So he made it again another vessel. —Jeremiah 18:2–4, KJV

Being a potter has given me insight into how God works in our lives.

As I work, I have two options for getting my clay.

I can buy it from the supplier, cleaned and ready to use.

Or I can find a place that I think will have clay and dig for it.

Both ways will require that I prepare the clay by wedging (rolling and kneading) it prior to throwing it on the potter’s wheel.

Digging for my own clay is going to be a longer process.

It is this experience, especially, that has me in awe of God. Based on the location of the clay, it may have impurities. I have to make sure that as I dig, I do so at a level where there are fewer impurities. I bring the clay home and dry it out because it must be broken down to liquid —an almost impossible task if the clay is already wet. After the sand or grit is allowed to settle, I strain it a few times through the finest mesh strainers, so I get only the slip (clay water). The clay is then allowed to dry out and await testing. I must test pieces of it before and after processing so that I can ascertain the differences. The clay must be stretched, punched, kneaded, and fired to extreme temperatures to see whether it can be used only for decorative work or can handle the rigors of functionality. Glazes must also be tested for “fit” before I make one single thing from the clay. All this, before the clay is perfect. I look at my life’s journey differently now.

I know that every stretch, every proverbial kick, and every extreme fire I experience allows God to humble and perfect me, making me fit for service.

Moses went through similar trials as he tended sheep in Midian. Joseph spent years in captivity as a slave and then a convict. His only crime? His brothers’ hatred. Hannah endured ridicule from her cowife, Peninnah, because she was barren. Are you going through what seems like a never-ending barrage of trials and heartache? Fear not. God is not punishing you. He is right there, aching because of your pain, but He knows that it is necessary for your eternal happiness.

So give thanks through the pain, for God is always there —yes, even in the midst of the pain— and He is working.
