Verse:The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. —Psalm 34:7, KJV
On the island where I was born, there are extremely venomous and vicious snakes, ranging from six to seven feet in length and as thick as a man’s arm. Few people survive if bitten by these snakes.
Suffice it to say, we all were terrified of them.
Back in those days, my father rented parcels of land where he planted vegetables to supplement the household income. Before planting season, he cleared the area of weeds that had overrun the property.
On many occasions, he encountered these terrible reptiles; however, God was always watching over him. These snakes have sensitive nerves at the bottom of their bellies that allow them to sense a person’s presence.
Thus, they can position themselves by pulling their entire body in one spiraling coil, with their head at the top, ready to strike a person before the person is aware of their presence. On one such occasion, my father was cleaning dead leaves from around banana trees while backing up to a fallen tree.
Later, he recounted that he had suddenly heard someone call his name. This startled him because he knew he was the only person in the field.
He quickly turned around to see who was there.
It was then he found himself facing the biggest snake he had ever seen. He prayed and slowly backed up to lengthen the distance between himself and the serpent. Fortunately, he was able to reach for a long stick with which he killed the dangerous reptile. But he was so frightened by this encounter that he returned home early after realizing how close he had come to being struck by that snake.
Had it not been for the Lord’s protection, my father would have been killed. We were all grateful to God for His watchful eye over him.
We had no doubt that an angel of the Lord had called my father by name, thereby saving him. The Bible tells us that Satan is waiting for any move that we may take away from the protection of our heavenly Father, and he’s ready to strike with fury.
I thank my heavenly Father who protects, delivers, and keeps us safe from Satan’s fangs.
