Verse:But none of them asked him why, or what they had been discussing. —John 4:27, TLB
While Jesus and the woman at the well were still conversing, His disciples returned from town and marveled that He was talking with this Samaritan woman. Yet no one questioned Him. As soon as Jesus revealed Himself to be the Messiah, the Samaritan woman left the well, leaving her water pot behind. Into the city she went to share what she had just experienced and bring others to meet the Savior.
John 4:39 reveals that “many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, ‘He told me all that I ever did’ ” (NKJV). This story is not found in the synoptic Gospels —Matthew, Mark, and Luke— John alone shares this story. Now let me tell you why I chose to highlight the woman at the well for this devotional reading. In 1988, after a twenty-seven-year absence, I returned to my denominational roots. At a church camp meeting in Mount Vernon, Ohio, I met the woman at the well. One night at the evening meeting, after recounting a powerful testimony of someone like me, speaker Dan Matthews made an altar call.
To my surprise, I responded —but ever so slowly, taking a circuitous route and seating myself about twelve rows away from the platform.
But Dan had observed me, and when he was finished talking to all the people down in front, he walked back to where I was seated.
We had a wonderful Spirit-filled conversation.
He told me the story of the Samaritan woman who had strayed, how she met the Savior at the well, and of her life being changed.
Though I had attended a Christian elementary school for two years, church high school for two years, and a Christian college for more than two years —and attended church and Sabbath School for many years— I had no recollection of ever having heard this story! That evening I was parched and ready for renewal.
After Dan offered a special prayer for me, he initiated a prayer covenant with me —a commitment to pray for each other for one month.
We corresponded several times.
I was finally rebaptized in 1990, largely due to his intercession for me, and I have never looked back. Who was that woman at the well that Jesus came to find? I am that woman!
