Verse:There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. —Proverbs 14:12, KJV
A few years ago I was flying to the East Coast to teach a healthful cooking seminar. My airplane seatmate was a gentleman in his early forties.
We exchanged the usual polite greetings.
Further conversation revealed he believed in God.
He also believed that our bodies were created in a way that could handle any food or substance because it was the “luck of the genes” that determined our longevity and health, not necessarily our choices. Guess what background this man came from? He shared with me that he was the son of the owner of one of the largest tobacco production companies in the United States. Does it matter how we take care of our bodies or what type of fuel we put into them? I believe that it does! God designed our bodies to be healthy. In His Word, He provides guidelines for their care and maintenance that will result in optimum health. We are careful to put the prescribed kinds of gasoline and oil into our vehicles, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. How much more diligent we should be, then, to follow our Creator’s “instruction manual” since we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14, KJV). God desires that we enjoy good health (3 John 2).
Someone once said that the Holy Bible is the world’s best medical textbook. In fact, in it, God gives us eight laws of health:
(1) Eat healthy, nutritious food (Genesis 1:29; 3:18).
(2) Briskly exercise daily (Genesis 2:15).
(3) Rest properly each night (Mark 6:31).
(4) Enjoy sunlight daily in small doses (Genesis 1:4).
(5) Drink plenty of water every day (Nehemiah 9:15).
(6) Get plenty of fresh air every day (Genesis 2:15).
(7) Live a temperate, drug-free life (Genesis 2:16, 17; Revelation 22:17).
And finally, (8) trust in divine power (Proverbs 3:5, 6).
In the Bible, we can find hundreds of references to health principles, starting with the diet and lifestyle God gave to humankind in the Garden of Eden as recorded in the book of Genesis. I hope you agree that good health is much more than mere “luck of the genes.” Today, why not resolve anew to follow God’s guidelines —all of them— for life and health?
