Triumph by Remembering the Past

Women · From the book Covered And Carried

Verse:

Give praise to the Lord, O my soul; let not all his blessings go from your memory. —Psalm 103:2, BBE

Though all are daily blessed by God, not all remember to praise Him for His mercies. Ingratitude and forgetfulness of God’s goodness and mercy come all too easily. King David warns us not to forget because God forgives sins and heals diseases. He is our Redeemer; He is our Provider and Source of mercy.

And only He can deliver us and judge those who would oppress and persecute us (see Psalm 103:3–6). The devil was the first being to exhibit ingratitude and a lack of remembrance for God’s goodness and mercy (Isaiah 14:12–15; Ezekiel 28:11–18; Revelation 12:7–9). These same two sins often dictated the Israelites’ choices as God faithfully continued to lead them to the Promised Land (Exodus 17:1–6; 32; Joshua 7; Judges 3; 4). Yet, whenever the people of Israel remembered God as their Sustainer, Deliverer, and Provider, He blessed them.

As people in spiritual Israel today, we must not allow the devil to have his way with us as he did with the children of Israel. Under God’s inspiration, author Ellen White counsels us not to forget God’s leading in our lives.

She wrote, in reviewing our past history, having traveled over every step of advance to our present standing, I can say, Praise God! As I see what God has wrought, I am filled with astonishment, and with confidence in Christ as leader.

We have nothing to fear for the future except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history.

We are now a strong people, if we will put our trust in the Lord; for we are handling the mighty truths of the word of God. We have everything to be thankful for.* Truly, the way to be triumphant throughout both present and future challenges is by remembering how God has led us in the past and then never forgetting His numerous blessings when we arise every morning and fall asleep every night.

Lord, please bless us and make us overcomers as we daily remember You and Your leading while going about our everyday lives.

In Your name, amen.
