Dressed to Impress

Women · From the book Covered And Carried

Verse:

I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem. —Job 29:14, KJV

Each day that life is extended to us is a huge blessing.

It is not because of our own power or righteousness.

It is because of God’s righteousness, mercy, grace, and compassion. As we go about our daily lives, how do we dress to reflect His character and goodness? Are we careless in our walk and speech? How about the way we treat others, our bodies, and the environment? Do we exude the same love as Christ? Allow me to take you back in time to one of the great apostles: Peter, the fisherman with a fiery tongue and spirit (Matthew 26:74). One day he met Jesus and noted Christ’s humble garb and the way He walked, preached, taught, and performed miracles. Jesus’ compassion and relationship with His heavenly Father spoke volumes as to the real “garment” He was wearing. The more time Peter spent with Jesus, the more his “garment” was transformed to better reflect that of the Master. Of course, this transformation didn’t take place in just one day. Peter often failed, even vowing to protect Christ just before the Crucifixion.

Hours later, this same disciple denied Jesus (Luke 22:54–62).

But Peter realized his mistake and, with great remorse and bitter weeping, repented of his sins and was forgiven. That was a turning point for him as he fully committed to “dressing” like Jesus through his daily walk, speech, and deportment.

He chose to abide in Jesus for the rest of his life (John 15:7).

Jesus heard the cry of his heart and responded.

You, too, can cry out to Jesus like Peter.

If you’re not clothed in Christ’s righteousness, you can go to Him with a contrite heart as did Peter. Do not dress to impress through outward adorning.

Immerse yourself in the spotless purity of Christ.

Trust Christ to change you, and do not give up when you fail Him. He is patient. Stay committed and focused. Spend time with Him each day in His Word. Others will notice you are no longer wearing the garb of the past, for you are changing into a new creature, clothed in the righteousness of Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Surround yourself with like-minded sisters whose mission is to be stewards for Jesus in a world that is not your final home (John 17:16).

Jesus will help you live as He did in a sinful world but not be tainted by its influences, wisdom, or ways. For you are wearing the garments of grace.
