Five Senses

Women · From the book Covered And Carried

Verse:

But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. —Jeremiah 10:10, NIV

Scripture points out the crucial difference between the true God and the myriad false gods and idols that many people have chosen to worship over the course of history. The true God is a living God, while the others are merely man-made contrivances. “They have mouths but they cannot speak.

They have eyes but they cannot see.

They have ears but they cannot hear. They have noses but they cannot smell. They have hands but they cannot feel. They have feet but they cannot walk. They cannot make a sound come out of their mouths” (Psalm 115:5–7, NLV).

The true God, however, exercises all the senses with which He created His human children. God can see the circumstances of both individuals and nations and can hear and respond to them. When He saw the mistreatment Hagar experienced, He sent her encouragement and help. In fact, Hagar named Him “the God who sees me” (Genesis 16:13, NIV). Likewise, the psalmist affirms that “the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry” (Psalm 34:15, NIV).

Scripture also records that God could smell the “pleasing aroma” of sacrifices offered by genuine worshipers (Genesis 8:21, NIV) but complained that the rituals of the insincere were “a stench” to Him (Amos 5:21, NIV).

Similarly, He uses the flavor of salt to illustrate how believers are to influence those around them (Matthew 5:13). The Lord touched Jeremiah’s mouth to confirm his calling as a prophet (Jeremiah 1:9). In fact, Jesus’ healing touch was one of the most significant features of His earthly ministry. We, in turn, need to make use of our senses on our spiritual journey. Like past heroes of faith, we should trustfully see ahead to the fulfillment of God’s promises (Hebrews 11:13), keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2) and our ears ready to listen for His voice (John 10:3).

If we let Him touch and change our hearts, we can become the fragrance of life to those He wants to save (see 2 Corinthians 2:15, 16, NIV).

Friends, let us not fail to accept and share the wonderful invitation to “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8, NIV)!
