Verse:“For every beast of the forest is Mine, And the cattle on a thousand hills. “For the world is Mine, and all its fullness.” —Psalm 50:10, 12, NKJV
There have been times in my life when I was, or thought I was, in dire straits and complained to the Lord that if He owned the cattle on a thousand hills, couldn’t He please sell off a few head and help me out! But do you know what? I have never been without what I needed, and more often than not, I’ve had much more.* In 1973, after my husband lost his job on a ranch north of Denver, we rolled back into town, broke and homeless. A blizzard was in full swing. Not wanting to spend another night in the back of a ’56 Chevy station wagon in subfreezing temperatures, we found a small studio apartment for US$100 a month. With some hesitation, I wrote a check for that amount, knowing there was nothing in the bank to cover it. But we would be gone early the next morning before the apartment owner would deposit the check. I didn’t know what else to do.
Would God provide? How would we cover the check? At least we would have one night in a warm place. That evening, I brought a stack of clothes into the room for some reason, but I don’t know why I did. The next morning, while gathering up things to leave, I put my hand into the pocket of a pair of jeans in the stack and felt a piece of paper. I pulled it out and, much to my surprise, saw I was holding a US$100 bill! I have no idea how it got into that pocket. I don’t remember putting it there, but I promptly went and deposited it in the bank, giving us a whole month to regroup and plan our next move.
Despite my imperfect plan to provide for our needs, God, in His perfect love, showed me He had a much better plan. He always does.
Many of you are experiencing uncertain times right now, maybe through no fault of your own. If you are, I want to challenge you to surrender any problem that seems bigger than yourself —and your ability to manage it— to the Lord.
He has a thousand ways to get you through.
He wants to be your Provider. He wants to reveal His love and care for you. And He wants a relationship with you because you are His beloved child.
