Blessings of Blackouts

Women · From the book New Every Morning

Verse:

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. —Jeremiah 29:13, NKJV

Eighteen-hour load shedding with no electricity from 4:00 A.M. to 11:00 P.M. every day. That was my new reality. The drought’s effect on the dam producing most of the nation’s electricity triggered a critical shortage, prompting the electricity provider to effect rolling blackouts. This was not fun, but as days rolled by, I realized that my lifestyle had changed into something beautiful and blessed.

I was studying God’s Word and praying more.

I had time to journal, write, and deep clean the rug in the living room. I had often prayed and asked God to reveal ways that I could spend more time with Him.

He had answered my prayer in a way that I had not anticipated —removing electricity from my life. Though I had to work harder to get through my daily chores, waking up in the middle of the night to iron and using LP gas for cooking and solar lamps for lighting, my soul was at peace because I was spending more time with my Savior.

Time opened up without twenty-four-hour satellite television beaming reality shows and no opportunity for binge-watching television series.

Preserving my phone battery to last the day until I could charge it again limited my social media browsing. I had more time for the important things.

It dawned on me that such a simple thing as electricity can take precedence over time with God. It took a national electricity crisis to open my eyes to my spiritual famine, carve out time with God, and prioritize my writing.

It is God’s wish that we spend time with Him. In those precious moments, we are renewed as we fellowship with Him. He intensely desires us to spend time with Him to deepen our appreciation of Him. Our characters are transformed to resemble His as we shun sin and worldliness. It is time we accepted His invitation, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10, NKJV). I urge you to take time in Bible study, prayer, and ministry to others and allow God to reveal Himself to you.

Do not let the small things of this world hinder you from seeking Him today.
