Verse:Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. —Revelation 3:20, KJV
When my youngest brother was little, he accidentally locked himself in his bedroom. At first, it was fun, something that brought him a great amount of attention.
But eventually, it was not so much fun.
He couldn’t get out, and no one else could get in.
No attempts to convey to him the simple process of turning the doorknob to release the lock made sense to his inexperienced mind.
Finally, the fire department was summoned to rescue Richard from his second-story predicament. This episode reminds me of Jesus’ invitation in Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (KJV).
Our heavenly Parent desperately wants to enter our heart’s room to bring peace, joy, assurance, and everything else we could ever need or want.
But true gentleman that He is, He doesn’t force access where He hasn’t been invited. Knock-knock. Sometimes we hear him; sometimes we don’t.
Knock-knock. Sometimes we don’t want to be bothered.
Knock-knock. Sometimes we are in need but don’t sense our need. Knock-knock. Sometimes we do sense our need yet don’t understand how to open the door to the One who can help. We sense Him outside the door. We know He is there.
He wants to come in, and we want Him to come in. Knock-knock. Where’s the fire department? How do I open the door? Perhaps that problematic door will open for you by one (or more) of four “handles.” First, invite Jesus in, thus opening the door of Revelation 3:20. Second, believe Jesus wants to help you. “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19, KJV). Third, stick faith in the face of doubt.
Tell Jesus, “I believe; help thou mine unbelief” (Mark 9:24, KJV). Last, trust Jesus to be true to His Word: “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: and if we know that he hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him” (1 John 5:14, 15, KJV).
