He Has Our Back

Women · From the book New Every Morning

Verse:

Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. —Isaiah 49:13, KJV

For forty years, God provided food for the children of Israel.

He didn’t give them the manna for a week at a time.

He gave it to them daily. If they collected more than a day’s worth at a time, the unused manna rotted by morning. Why? Scripture said it was like coriander seeds, but coriander seeds can last much longer than a day.

The fact that the manna melted when the sun “waxed hot” means that it was only one day’s supply. God designed the manna to be good for only one day.

He wanted His children to rely on Him for their daily sustenance.

He wanted them to look forward to the next day.

He wanted them to know that He was the One who brought them out of Egypt and was going to be the One who would feed them during the journey to Canaan. He wanted to remind them daily. The Lord knows what our needs are.

He will provide for us no matter what is on the horizon, if only we trust that He will do what He promised: put food on our table, provide water to quench our thirst, and give shelter from pestilence. We tend to think that we have to gather and hoard things to make sure that we are not lacking, forgetting that everything in the universe is God’s, and He will never leave us nor forsake us (see Hebrews 13:5).

While Jesus was with His disciples, they, too, forgot that they were in the presence of a powerful Master who fed Israel in the desert as well as the five thousand and the four thousand. We have so many examples of the power of our Omnipotent God; still, we worry about our tomorrow. Sure, there is pestilence in the world, but He will protect us as He did the children of Israel from the plagues in the land of Egypt.

He said that not a hair of our head would fall without His knowing.

Sometimes I imagine God chuckling at all the solutions men think they have, not realizing that the answer is in His hands. I pray that this precious promise will encourage your heart: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us” (Romans 8:35, 37, KJV; emphasis added).
