In Our Darkest Moments, the Son Shines

Women · From the book New Every Morning

Verse:

For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. —2 Corinthians 4:6, NASB

One night as I put my baby boy to sleep, I cried.

I felt alone with no one to turn to. Even the God I served seemed far away. In my pain, I cried out to Him, “Lord, You know my heart and my desire.

I know I have failed You. Please hear my cry and show me You still love me.” The room I was in was so dark that I could not see my hands or the child on the bed. Suddenly a bright light shone through the window. It shone directly on the Bible that my father had given me. A small voice said, “You need to read your Bible and turn around.” In my darkest hour, He was still with me. That light affirmed His presence.

Twenty-nine years later, my husband and I decided that we would like to visit my parents in London. All my siblings were also going.

It was great to see everyone after such a long time. It was a great family reunion, but it was soon time for me to return home.

Only two weeks after I came home, I received a call from my sister. My mom had a fall and was in the hospital. They assured me that she would be OK.

A few days later, my sister called again.

The news was not good. Test results showed my mom had pancreatic cancer. The doctor gave her one week to live. My heart sank.

I went home and told my family the bad news.

This time, I was not alone in the darkness.

In our Friday night worship, we asked God for a special airfare. God answered our prayer. I was able to go and see my mother.

Three weeks after my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, she went to sleep in Jesus. The day of the funeral was a wet, cloudy London day.

Again I asked God to shine through. God came through for me again. As they lowered her into the ground, a bright ray of sunlight shone on my son’s back. As I looked up to the sky, I knew it was the Son shining to assure me He was with us.

Sisters, even in your darkest moments, trust God; believe Him.

He will shine in your darkest moments.

Because of that Light, I’m holding on.
