A Degree for Mothers

Women · From the book New Every Morning

Verse:

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” —Deuteronomy 6:6–9, NKJV

In 2010, I received an interesting call from my son.

He had just completed his MBA and was excited.

However, what he said next was what grabbed my attention. “Mom,” he said, “you are the only one now without three letters behind your name.” “You are right,” I quickly responded. “I don’t have three; in fact, I have six letters: M-O-T-H-E-R. And I got that title before you were born because your older sister qualified me.” I can still remember his chuckle as he admitted I had outwitted him with my response.

Over the years since then, I have reflected on this statement and encouraged many mothers who think they have not accomplished much because they are “just moms” and never earned a degree. Acquiring a degree is commendable, but mothering is one of the greatest responsibilities given to feeble humans.

It is a lifetime work for which God guides you through the endless internship. You remain in training as long as you live. In one of the most profound statements on motherhood, Ellen White says, “Next to God, the mother’s power for good is the strongest known on earth.”* Only the One whose power exceeds yours can help you make a success of the motherhood experience. When God gives you the mother degree, He stays with you long after the degree is conferred. God is good and kind.

He knows your mother degree does not make you ever know it all.

You need to keep your certification current by renewing your connection with Him daily. Claim the many promises in His Word.

I encourage you to search and find many more to keep your mother degree current and relevant!
