Her Crown and Glory

Women · From the book New Every Morning

Verse:

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. —James 1:12, NIV

Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder.

But in many societies, a woman’s beauty is often associated with long hair.

In these cultures where much emphasis is placed on long hair, the pressure often results in women going to many extremes to meet this demand.

In my teen years, I was told that a woman’s hair was her “crown and her glory” —likely a spinoff from a Scripture passage (see 1 Corinthians 11:15).

While the intended meaning of this passage is widely debated, that is not my focus today. Instead, I want to look at what happens when a woman begins to lose her “crown and glory.” The consequences of sin batter us both spiritually and physically. Many women lose their hair because of aging, cancer, lupus, or even stress.

The trauma associated with seeing one’s hair fall to the ground, collect in clumps in one’s hand or brush, or clog the bathroom drains can be terrifying.

But thankfully, there are options available to remedy such a situation.

Many women across the world cut their hair and donate it to organizations that make beautiful wigs for those in need.

This and other options help ladies who struggle with hair loss.

While losing one’s hair is a major matter, there is a greater “crown and glory” that we could lose. Christ gave His life on Calvary to save us from our sins and offers us a crown of eternal life. The choices we make each day will help determine whether we will inherit that crown. So while we can try to find ways of coping with losing our earthly “crowns” (our hair), there is a greater crown that we must not lose —the crown of eternal life. Let us dedicate ourselves to spending time each day with Jesus so that He can transform our characters in preparation for His heavenly crown, which we can lay at His feet when we meet Him in glory. Pledge to recommit your life to Jesus today and be saved in His kingdom.
