Verse:My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands. —Proverbs 3:1, NKJV
I had just completed vacuuming the house when my grandson, Doug, came inside to use the bathroom. When he decided to take the shortcut back to the sandbox by way of the dining room, I told him he could not use the dining room door because the carpet had just been vacuumed and I didn’t want sand brought in.
He would have to use the back door.
He looked up at me with his beautiful dark eyes and began to inform me with great respect and seriousness that he could not use that door.
I replied that I was very sorry, but he must use the back door. Doug then put his hands on his tiny waist, and shaking his head back and forth, he repeated, “You don’t understand, Grandma Dottie, I have to go out that door.” Again, I said, “Doug, I’m sorry, but you cannot use the dining room door to walk to and from the sandbox.” Doug climbed onto the kitchen stool, holding up four little fingers and speaking in his most convincing yet patronizing voice, he said, “I am four years old, and you are an old woman, almost a hundred! You just don’t understand. I need to go out that door!” as he pointed toward the dining room. Again, I repeated, “I’m sorry, Doug, you must use the back door.” Without further comment, Doug shrugged his shoulders and jumped off the stool.
His tiny feet raced to make up for lost time, so I thought, as he headed out the back door to the sandbox. I remember standing there in my kitchen wondering what that was all about. Years later, I learned that Doug was a little boy who had a need to be safe from the wasps flying around the back door.
Throughout God’s Word, He repeats, emphasizes, and frequently asks us to remember. When we see this repetition and emphasis in the Bible, we need to pay close attention, for He is telling us something of great importance.
Although He understands our reasons for not wanting to really listen or obey Him, God cannot change those requirements “written in stone,” for they speak of His character and exist for the good of everyone, both now and throughout eternity.
