When Fear Complicates Our Lives

Women · From the book New Every Morning

Verse:

“Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.” —Genesis 12:13, ESV

We have all at some time felt fear for not only real threats but also for those that we believe exist. This fear drives us to decide for ourselves and make mistakes instead of trusting God. That’s what Abram did.

“When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, ‘I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, “This is his wife.” Then they will kill me, but they will let you live’” (Genesis 12:11, 12, ESV). The Bible tells us that Sarai was beautiful. But what if Abram had told the truth and said that she was his wife? Would they have killed him? Or would they have respected him? Would God have protected Abram if he had told the truth and trusted Him? Things can go badly when we make decisions based on our fears instead of trusting God.

Let’s look at Abram’s case: He lied because he was afraid.

He made his wife lie, and that lie caused Pharaoh to take Sarai as his wife. Pharaoh and his house suffered different plagues because of this lie.

When we analyze the facts, we realize that this decision affected Abram and everyone around him. This wrong decision caused the people he loved the most to suffer. Abram had listened to God before. What would have happened if he had placed his faith in God and followed what He asked of him? What example could Abram have set for Pharaoh and the Egyptians if he had told the truth? Surely everything would have ended differently because God would have taken care of Abram, and he wouldn’t have needed to lie. I don’t know what fears you have today, but place your trust in God to help you make good decisions. He will take care of you.
