Verse:They that go down to the sea in ships, That do business in great waters; These see the works of the LORD, And his wonders in the deep. —Psalm 107:23, 24, KJV
There is a great story in Psalm 107.
The psalmist recounts the storms that sailors experience out on the sea and how they see the wonders and power of God save them in the storms (of life).
The sailors are often overcome by the waves.
Their “soul is melted because of trouble” (verse 26, KJV).
They are often at their “wit’s end” (verse 27, KJV).
They are being tossed about on the sea.
The waves are crashing over them.
They have no control and no power.
They are sinking. They are helpless in the storm.
But then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and He calms the winds and the waves. The psalm repeats this promise, “Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses” (verses 6, 13, KJV; compare verses 19, 28). Apparently, we as humans stay in trouble.
We continually need God to deliver us out of our troubles.
I can remember several times in recent months that I felt like I was under water and sinking with no help in sight.
The winds and the storm were blowing over me, and I felt myself sinking beneath the waves. I knew it was the end for me.
I knew I had gone too far this time, but when I cried out to God, He provided a way out of my situation. He provided an escape and brought me safely to shore. The chapter begins with the reminder, “O give thanks unto the LORD, for He is good: for his mercy endureth for ever” (verse 1, KJV). The psalmist repeats this thought of giving thanks for God’s mercy: “Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” (verses 8, 21, 31, KJV).
Amen! God’s mercy and goodness are everlasting.
He is available to show us mercy even when we are in storms of our own making. The last verse of this chapter gives us the final admonition, “Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD” (verse 43, KJV). Let us remember to cry out to God when we are in stormy weather.
He hears us, and He will bring us safely to shore.
