I often travel for work, and sometimes, by choice or chance, I arrive at my destination during the darkness of night. On one trip I traveled from Alabama to Florida in the USA. Delayed connections pushed my arrival through the night and into the early morning hours. Every interaction and transaction seemed fraught with difficulties.

I claimed my luggage and walked what felt like miles to the trolley that would take me to the bus, which would drive me to the rental car place.

When I arrived at the trolley stop, a lady in uniform signaled for me to wait. After several minutes I was directed to take an elevator, padded with heavy brown cloth on all sides, to the bus stop. The ride felt dangerous as the bus drove through heavy rain and over the hilly curves. I was relieved to finally get my car, but it took a long while to locate the exit and make my way to the hotel nearby. After my trip, as I prepared to return home, I was surprised at how well I negotiated my way in the daylight. There were no curves or hills on my way to the car rental place. The trolley was there and worked perfectly. The way to the airport felt shorter.

I walked with confidence as I bathed in the beauty of the sights and the sunshine. I could not remember the location of the damp and dim elevator, but it did not matter. The day was clear, the path was safe, and my heart was glad.

This experience reminded me of my life’s journey.

I thought about the times when I stumbled in the dark, filled with sadness, sorrow, and self-doubt. Times when life was unjust and unkind to me and my loved ones. Times when disasters overwhelmed my soul. Then there were bright periods when I experienced miracles, moments of pure elation, and God’s favor beyond my imagination.

I sensed the Lord reminding me that He is always with me. The One who led me in the night was now leading me in the light. My sisters, whether you are on top of the world or struggling in the valley, God is with you. He is the Way in the day, and most comforting of all, He is our Might in the night!
