Caring About Others

Today

Women · From the book Almost Home

Verse:

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. —Philippians 2:4, ESV

Mumtaz began working as an outpatient volunteer in the Acute Treatment Unit Department at the hospital. After some months she became a permanent staff member when she was hired as the public relations officer. Her work involves the registration of patients’ confirmed schedules at the registration kiosk. She gives them a number tag to take when they have chemotherapy treatment. After treatment the patients return the tag and place it into a slotted box. Mumtaz is friendly and has a good rapport with all her patients.

She has a gift for remembering their names and treats each one with dignity and respect. Sometimes she pushes patients in wheelchairs and helps them check their weight and height using their registration numbers. She also wheels them to a taxi stand or bus shuttle service. When I look at her diligence and her manner of dealing with people, I am reminded of God’s tender love for me. The apostle John reminds us, “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:17, 18, ESV). Paul exhorts us to “encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11, NIV). Paul also urges us to “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2, NKJV). Ellen G. White writes, “Men may speak fluently upon doctrines, and may express strong faith in theories, but do they possess Christianlike meekness and love? If they reveal a harsh, critical spirit, they are denying Christ. If they are not kind, tenderhearted, long-suffering, they are not like Jesus; they are deceiving their own souls. A spirit contrary to the love, humility, meekness, and gentleness of Christ, denies Him, whatever may be the profession.”* I appreciate Mumtaz’s example of Christlike love. I want to be more like her as she serves each day as the hands and feet of Jesus. I pray many will come to know and love Jesus as they see His love shine through us in our kindness toward them.
