Verse:

You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels. —Hebrews 12:22

These certainly aren’t the “good old days.” While it’s true the “good old days” were far from perfect, there’s no question that society, in general, is not trending in a heavenly direction. As time continues to advance toward the return of Jesus, we are reminded that “the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time” (Revelation 12:12). Many church members who observe the state of the world are discouraged because it seems to them as though the devil has things all his own way. But God has other ideas. When Satan fell from his position in the presence of God, one-third of all the angels in heaven rebelled against the government of heaven. “His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth” (Revelation 12:4). While we cannot know how many angels were in heaven at the time of Satan’s fall, it was surely a very large number. This explains why we see so much evil in the world. Angels given over to wickedness, assisted by billions of people who are governed by sin, are capable of instigating a vast amount of evil. But the good news is that as many troublesome demons as there might be, there are far more holy angels.

The prophet Daniel wrote of thousands of thousands and ten thousand times ten thousand angels (Daniel 7:10). And Hebrews 12:22 describes them as “an innumerable company of angels!” An enormous number of angels watch over us. We don’t ever have to worry that God is going to find Himself short-staffed.

That “innumerable company of angels” assures you that heaven has plenty of help available. While we cannot readily see what takes place outside our view, the final result of the great controversy between Christ and Satan was settled long ago. With Jesus as the commander of the angel hosts, victory for God’s side is assured. Those who claim the righteousness of Christ and yield to His leading are on the winning side!
