Working for God

Adults · From the book The Hope Of Glory

Verse:

“It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch.” —Mark 13:34

Jason felt as though he didn’t belong in the student colporteur program. He had been with the group for two weeks, and sales were slow.

He wasn’t confident knocking on doors and felt he didn’t think quickly enough to be able to meet objections and answer questions.

Knocking on another door, he looked down at his shoes with an uneasy feeling in his heart. Would he get many books out today? When he got back together with his fellow literature evangelists and heard their success stories, would he feel as though he belonged? He knew he was doing important work, but it just wasn’t working out for him as he wished. When no one came to the door, Jason knocked again. As He turned to walk away, he heard a voice. “Excuse me,” a woman said. “Can I help you?” He started his canvass, explaining that he was a student working his way through college and was in the neighborhood offering life-changing resources.

But there was something different about this woman.

Jason wasn’t sure what it was. She was clearly interested but stopped him mid-canvass. “There’s something I have to tell you,” she announced.

His heart sank. All Jason wanted was to see people take the books he knew could change their lives. “I’ve been feeling so low lately. You might not believe this,” she said, “but when you knocked on the door, I was literally on my knees, praying that God would send someone to my home to help me understand the Bible.” She bought every one of the Bible-based books in Jason’s carry bag.

And at that moment, Jason’s summer changed completely.

He walked with a spring in his step, knowing by experience that he was doing God’s work. His sales were never spectacular, but his enthusiasm was.

He knew he was working for Jesus and that God was using him to make a difference. God has a work for everyone.

Don’t let discouragement prevent you from doing the work He has for you.
