Verse:“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” —Exodus 20:8
I was about nine years old when one of my brothers joined a new church. He surprised our family by going to church on Saturday.
In fact, he believed the entire seventh day of the week should be kept holy, from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. Having never heard of such a thing, I asked him why he believed the way he did. He opened his Bible and had me read from Exodus 20:8–11. It clarified nothing. “Which day is the seventh day of the week?” he asked me. I knew the answer. “Sunday!” He suggested I take a look at the calendar hanging on the wall about ten feet away, a calendar my father had purchased from our church. “One, two, three, four, five, six, Saturday?” He wasn’t surprised by the confused look on my face. I turned to my mother. “Is Saturday the seventh day of the week?” She confirmed that yes, it indeed was. I turned back to my brother. “So why do we think of Sunday as the Sabbath day?” “Because hundreds of years ago, your church changed it from Saturday to Sunday,” he answered. I felt a wave of relief wash over me.
“Well, if the church changed it, it has to be right!” He asked me one more question. “Do you really think any church has the right to change what God wrote in the Ten Commandments?” The answer was obvious to me, but I don’t recall responding to him. I never forgot my brother’s question.
Years later, when I sensed God calling me to commit my life to Him, I knew I would keep the seventh-day Sabbath. How could I not? I knew little about keeping the Sabbath and had never visited a church that worshiped on Saturday.
What would it be like? And what would people think of my decision? None of that mattered. Before my first Bible study, before attending church, I was committed. I had decided to follow God’s Word.
I learned a lesson that has stayed with me ever since.
You will never regret a decision to follow Jesus and allow the Bible to be the guide for your life.
