Silent Night

Adults · From the book The Hope Of Glory

Verse:

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” —Luke 2:13, 14

One thing I have always loved about Christmas is Christmas music.

Not the incessant, grating Christmas music you hear at shopping malls, but the many Christmas songs that are powerful and meaningful.

Handel’s Messiah is often sung at Christmas, and there are few works that could claim the majesty and power captured by Handel and librettist Charles Jennens. O come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem! Come and behold Him, born the King of angels! O come, let us adore Him, … Christ, the Lord! It’s a hopeful, inspiring message wrapped in a beautiful melody, proclaiming Jesus has been born! Christ the Lord has come to the world! “Silent Night” was originally written as “Stille Nacht” in Austria in the 1800s. Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight: Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing “Alleluia! Christ the Savior is born!”
